Service Project for SEAALL 2020 in Jackson, MS:
Big House Books

Each year, the Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries (SEAALL) identifies opportunities for SEAALL members to serve the local community in the host city of our annual conference. This year, we want to raise awareness, money, and in-kind donations for Big House Books (BHB) in Jackson, Mississippi.

Please help us support Big House Books by making a donation via one of the methods mentioned below. If you would like to visit BHB for a tour, meet the team for drinks, etc. please check in at the table in the exhibit hall for more details from a BHB volunteer.

Please pass this information on to any friends or members you think might be interested in donating. Thank you so much for your support!

NFORMATION ABOUT BIG HOUSE BOOKS

“Big House Books doesn’t judge a book by its cover. We believe in literacy for all – including those in our correctional facilities. That’s why we’ve set out to provide books to Mississippians in prisons and juvenile detention centers. Every person has the right to educate themselves, and it’s our goal to make that a reality.”

Mission: Big House Books is a non-profit, volunteer organization that sends free books by request to prisoners in Mississippi correctional facilities in order to promote literacy and be a vehicle of change for prison reform.

History:

Organizers Kelli Gann, Olivia Cote, and Katy Morgan, who are all public school teachers, and Shelby Parsons trace the origin of BHB to a local performance from Carrboro, N.C.-based troupe The Mysterious Rabbit Puppet Army in December 2014. You can read more about how they got started here.

Ways to Donate

Please include “SEAALL” in notes section for monetary donations. This will help us track how much SEAALL members have contributed.
